I think this brings up a good point. I can understand giving a new bridge a new name, but the name Tappan Zee has been associated with this region for hundreds of years. By changing the name of the bridge so radically (What’s wrong with “New Tappan Zee Bridge”?) you lose your history. The first line of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” is:
“In the bosom of one of those spacious coves which indent the eastern shore of the Hudson, at that broad expansion of the river denominated by the ancient Dutch navigators the Tappan Zee, and where they always prudently shortened sail and implored the protection of St. Nicholas when they crossed, there lies a small market town or rural port, which by some is called Greensburgh, but which is more generally and properly known by the name of Tarry Town.”
By using three place names, that story places itself right in that wide part of the Hudson exactly where the bridge is. This is a part of history that gets erased a little. Why not keep the old name, and keep that state history intact?
